The Lucayans
by SANDRA RILEY

When Christopher Columbus landed at Guanahani on 12 October 1492, he was greeted by a party of young male Lucayan Indians. He told Queen Isabella of Spain that these people were poor in material resources but were rich in love and laughter. Within fifteen years, the entire population of the Lucayans, and an untold number of Taino, Caribe, and Arawaks had been exterminated by the Conquistadors. This is the story of their meeting: a collision of two worlds, a prose-poem told from both perspectives, illumining with words and pictures the life of the Lucayan Taino people before they disappeared completely.
